On Thursday 16th April the Security Risk Management Alumni will be hosting our first Networking evening of 2020. This event is taking place at WeWorks HQ on York Road, South Bank, London, where you will have the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals from across both the public and private Security Sectors in the comfort of an ideally positioned and quirky location. We are delighted to welcome a speaker who has a completely different story to tell compared to those we’ve welcomed in the past. He’s Former British Army Officer and Mercenary Simon Mann.

Simon served part of a 34-year prison sentence in Equatorial Guinea for his role in a failed coup d’état in 2004, before receiving a presidential pardon on humanitarian grounds on 2 November 2009.

Mann was extradited from Zimbabwe to Equatorial Guinea on 1 February 2008,[2] having been accused of planning a coup d’état to overthrow the government by leading a mercenary force into the capital Malabo in an effort to overthrow President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. Charges in South Africa of aiding a coup in a foreign country were dropped on 23 February 2007,[3] but the charges remained in Equatorial Guinea, where he had been convicted in absentia in November 2004. He lost an extradition hearing to Equatorial Guinea after serving three years of a four-year prison sentence in Zimbabwe for the same crimes and being released early on good behaviour.[4]

Upon Mann’s arrival in Equatorial Guinea for his trial in Malabo, public Prosecutor Jose Olo Obono said that Mann would face three charges – crimes against the head of state, crimes against the government, and crimes against the peace and independence of the state.[5] On 7 July 2008, he was sentenced to 34 years and four months in prison by a Malabo court.[6] He was released on 2 November 2009, on humanitarian grounds.[7][8]

This will be an interview style talk (Simon will be asked Questions, one 2 one from a member of the SRM Alumni) and the floor will then be open to guests to also ask their questions.

We ask Guests to arrive promptly for 7pm for registration in the main reception, you’ll then be directed by the WeWork team. Complimentary Beer/Wine will be available throughout the evening in the cool/quirky break out area as well as canapes thanks to our amazing sponsors WeWork. You’ll be called through to the main auditorium shortly after 8pm for a quick welcome from Aloma and the sponsors before Simon takes the stage.

There will be a further selection of complimentary Drinks available, allowing you to network with the evening ending at 11pm.Tickets for this event are £30 to Guests.

The Dress Code for the evening is Smart/Casual Dress (no Trainers).
